Special Research Topics About FRP Jacketing

In actual situation of retrofit practice, the jackets are installed while the columns are sustaining forces due to dead and live loads. However, for the testing convenience in most research, simulated loads including axial force,
shear and moment are applied to the model specimen after the installation of jacketing. Li et al. (2001) investigated the effects on column behavior due to the discrepancy in  FRP installation and axial loading sequences. Their test
results indicated that the applied axial load after FRP installation activates the jacket earlier and results in higher initial stiffness and falsely larger ductility than the actual retrofit cases where the jackets are installed while axial loads exist in the columns. Such effects may deserve further research in future for more realistic evaluation of FRP retrofit efficiency.
